The House of Sand and Fog Discussion
Book Club Group for House of Sand and Fog Oprah · Andre Dubus III · George · Sharareh · Robin · Peggy

Nothing about this book is predictable and nothing about the discussion was either. See some of the passionate comments below from one of our most lively Book Club gatherings yet!

Oprah: I have never wanted to talk about a book more than I want to talk about this book ... I kept going back across the street to Border's and buying more copies and handing them out to people and neighbors in the elevator ... and then was so excited to be able to tell the whole world about House of Sand and Fog.

George: It's interesting that Oprah says that she couldn't put it down because I actually put it down for three weeks ... I thought, I don't want to be around these people ... There was no character that I could relate to which is why I liked this book."

Sharareh [To George]: Related in the matter of decisions? Personality? We all probably have those personalities all the time. The possessiveness. The weakness. We all have it. Don't you?

Peggy: The beginning of it, I was hating so much. Shame on me. When is this going to get to the good part? Because I'm not used to the darkness of the characters ... Usually the books I pick are happy stories or at least there's a conflict and there's a villain, and there's a good guy ... So at times the colonel is a good guy and then the next minute he's a bad guy. I couldn't stand him.

Robin: I think the colonel is like anybody else. He had a good side and a bad side ... I personally liked the colonel in the beginning. I thought, to leave your house in the morning dressed in a suit and then have to go and change to go through all of that for your family to keep this status ...

Andre on the real-life inspiraton for the Colonel:I'll tell you what [the colonel] said ... He's carrying groceries. He's so sallow. He looks exhausted. And he says, "Andre, I never thought my life would come to this. I used to work with kings and queens. Presidents and prime ministers. Now I serve cigarettes to college students, and they don't respect me.

Oprah: I couldn't have even imagined that ending—down to the last quote!— Andre, I've never read a book like this! Thank you very much. Oh my goodness!

Andre: What's so gratifying is you're reading [the characters] as real people. That's all I want.
