The Oprah Winfrey Show
Am I Normal?

Terry Real Is it normal to have negative thoughts or feelings about your spouse after the big day? Marriage counselor Terry Real says, "yes."

When the Honeymoon is Over
Terry says that the day you wake up and look at the person next to you and realize you've made a terrible mistake—that's the first day of your real marriage.

"What's really been a deal that men and women have bought in to, especially women, is [the idea that] you have this perfect wedding and you can escape into it. It's like you create this postcard, and you can crawl into there and live in it for the rest of your life. ...

The horrible thing is that after the wedding is over, what you bring back to your life is you and your partner!"

Nobody's Perfect
Terry believes that the first year of marriage is critical, because that's when you set the pattern for the future. Couples need to be realistic with one another.

"We're taught to believe that a good relationship is perfect. It's relationship shame. You look to the left, then the right, and we think, 'They're having much better sex and less fights than us.' They're looking at you and thinking the same thing!

Real intimacy is about the collision of your human imperfection with his human imperfection and what the two of you do with it."
