Marc Parent: A former caseworker hoping for change
Turning StonesAs a caseworker for Emergency Child Services in New York, Marc Parent and his partner missed clues to the impending tragedy of an infant's death. He tells his story in his new book Turning Stones.

After visiting four cases earlier that day, he went to visit an infant late in the evening. Marc says he missed clues that would indicate that the child needed help. The baby was thin and weak, and died four days after Marc's visit. Marc failed to take the child to an emergency room. The frustration he felt was what stopped him. Marc recognizes that we all feel frustrated that not enough is being done for these children. However, Marc says, there are things being done. As a caseworker, he had taken children out of their homes in the middle of the night to keep them safe. He believes people want to put blame on the "system" when the "system" really is all of us. People who are doing these jobs are doing them because they want to help kids. Because they are so overworked and underpaid, our expectations are unrealistic.

Marc wrote Turning Stones out of the frustration he felt as a caseworker. He now works in an office of 15 people in a city of 7million. His group serves as investigators and as a SWAT team for child protection. Marc proposes a mixture of social work and police work to develop SWAT teams across the country to make sure these kids are safe.
