How To Raise A Thinking Child

Telling Lies, Acting Out

Myrna ShureMany parents first talk, then yell and as a last resort, spank to get their children to stop bad behavior. Dr. Shure says yelling and spanking will only make a child more angry, frustrated and more likely to act out in school. Eventually your child may begin to tune out your system of discipline.

Dr. Shure suggests asking your child questions that will help motivate them to want to tell the truth. Our young guest today says she was lying because she was afraid of getting spanked. The key to getting your child to stop lying is discovering they core of why they are doing it and how it makes her feel.

Ask:
Are you sometimes untruthful?
Can you think of a reason why you would lie?
What are the consequences?

How do you think your parents feel when they punish you?

How do you feel when your parents punish you?

What are you going to do the next time you have an opportunity to lie?
How will you feel when you do this?

Does your child's acting out seem explosive? Discuss more on our Explosive Children message board.
