Why This Boy Was Raised As A Girl
David Reimer's Story This is the story of an infant boy who was surgically changed into a girl after a botched circumcision. Born Bruce
Born in the sixties, Bruce and Brian were identical
twin brothers. When they were several months old, they
were circumcised. During Bruce's procedure, he lost
his penis. Doctors in the sixties found Bruce (now David)
to be the perfect experiment specimen because he was
an identical twin. No scientist could devise a more
perfect case study of the effects of Nature vs. Nurture.
They urged Bruce's parents to go through the process
of making Bruce a girl. It was an agonizing decision,
but they did and it turned out to be the cruelest
fate imaginable.As Brenda Bruce
(now David) became Brenda at a very early age. From day one, Brenda
wasn't the least bit feminine. She was an outcast. His mother recalls
the first time she put a dress on David, "He tried to pull it off."
As Brenda, David went through surgeries, hormone therapy, and counseling
- trying to brainwash him in to becoming a girl. The parents and
doctors kept pushing the femininity. "I never quite fit in." Brenda
was forced to wear dresses and was encouraged to play with dolls,
but that didn't make her a girl. At
fourteen, she discovered the unthinkable... that "she" had been
born a "he." There was no question about changing his identity back
to being a boy.Now David David
is 34 years old, and has been living as a male for the last 20 years.
He is now happily married and raising 3 children from his wife's
previous marriage. His children know him as "Daddy."David is a very forgiving man and says not as angry as he used to be. "With the circumcision, what's done is done. It was an accident. There is no malice involved. It was too many years ago." He says could possibly forgive the doctor who pushed to make him a girl if the doctor apologized to him. And on this mother's decision he says, "How can I hate my mother for that?" He believes that she was listening to the experts and thought she was making the best decision for him at the time. David says of his ordeal, "It's one thing to lose a part of your body. It's another thing for people to try to convince you you're something that you're not." Read what David's mother, brother, wife an author of this story As Nature Made Him: The Boy Who Was Raised As A Girl. have to say about this ordeal. A Tragic Update Sadly, David Reimer took his own life on May 4, 2004. Go back |
