Kate Capshaw on Love
Extra Special Delivery
Imagine that
you've just received a steamy, anonymous love letter. Now what?
That's the premise of a new film starring Kate Capshaw entitled
(appropriately) The Love Letter. Kate knows a thing or two
about true love. She's the mother of seven children, married to
Steven Spielberg, and, from the ways she speaks about it all, very,
very much in love.
Work
That Camera
Kate
and Steven exchanged many love letters at the beginning of their
romance. In fact, for their first anniversary Kate gave Steven an
antique Shaker letter box in which all those letters and notes (and
all those have been written since) are safely tucked away. Kate
says she fell in love with Steven while watching him make a film
(1984's Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom). "It's
so hot to watch him work the camera," she told Oprah.
Forbidden
Footage
Steven
and Kate are indeed "soul mates," as Oprah
called them. In a videotaped piece Steven described
Kate as a "someone I want to make proud of
me." She's also someone who made him jealous
during production of The Love Letter.
To protect his feelings, Kate asked that all
kissing scenes between her and co-star Tom
Everett Scott be edited from the dailies before
Steven saw them. Eventually, however, Steven
got get his hands and eyes on the forbidden
footage and Kate says it took her three hours
to calm him down. "That's kind of endearing
after seven kids," Oprah said.
Heter-O-Sex-Ual?
Ellen
DeGeneres plays Kate's best friend in The Love Letter. To
prepare for her role as a woman who dates a lot of men, Ellen joked,
"I slept with a lot of men during the movie." Oprah wondered if
she ever thought twice about playing a heter-o-sex-ual? "That's
how I say it, too," Ellen responded. The truth is that she does
worry about audiences not being able to forget about that Time
magazine cover and the "puppy" episode. "I have to take responsibility
for it being such a big deal for so long," Ellen confessed. "Now
I have a different perspective."
Back
on Track... TV to Follow
Ellen
described the months following her TV show's
cancellation as "a really hard time in my life...
I went through a major depression... I used to
say that if I would just come out, no one would
be able to hurt me any more. I was wrong. I
got torn apart... it was bad, like a year of
sitting at home wondering if I would ever work
again." She spent that time reading and getting
her life and career back on track. And now?
Ellen revealed that she's working on a new
television show. Though she wouldn't say what
or where, she did divulge when: midseason.
Ellen, welcome back!
Real-Life
Love Letters
Inspired
by all that love in the air of The Love Letter, we decided
to seek out some love letters ourselves. First, Michael and Heather.
In his letter to Heather, Michael said, "You are the person I will
fly with through eternity." Then, surprise - a proposal! And - an
answer! "Oh my God, yes," Heather said. Next, Jeanine and John.
Since she was 19, Jeanine has lived with rheumatoid arthritis and
its disfiguring effects on her hands. She thought no one would ever
be able to love her, until John became part of her life. John says
he loves Jeanine because of her hands, not in spite of them, and
communicated his love in a beautiful poem entitled, Why I Love
Your Hands.
