Protecting Your Teen

From the show Suburban Teens: The New Prostitutes

What can you do to keep teen prostitution from effecting your family? Heed the advice of parents and teen girls who have been through the pain.

Never Say "Never"
Bad things happen to good people, and even teen prostitution can fall on your home. In Suzanna Smalley's August 2003 Newsweek article, she mentions Stacy*, a teen from an affluent home in St. Paul, Minnesota. Her parents were quite loving, but they chose to believe what they wanted to believe—not that their daughter was capable of prostitution. Believe the truth and deal with reality.

Battered and Brainwashed
Why don't the girls who get involved with prostitution just return home? Understand how tough and violent pimps are: They have a tremendous ability to brainwash a troubled, naïve young girl. You might not be able to handle getting your child back alone—contact the authorities.

Show Her Respect
Teenage angst is nearly redundant, and they often have their own way of expressing their pain. Listen to your teen, and look for the signs you might not expect—she is likely crying out for help in her own way.

Show Her She Has a Future
Teach her to turn pain into something positive. Don't allow others' judgments to define who she is—your daughter is defined by what she does now, regardless of her past. In turn, this will give her respect for herself.
