It's real, and it's raw. Teenage prostitution could be in your town and affect your family.
In Your Neighborhood Teenage girls are being lured into prostitution—sometimes by other teenage girls—at places right in their neighborhood: the local supermarket, the mall, theaters, fast food restaurants and town parks. In Your Home In some cases, teenage girls are selling sex from their bedroom or other rooms in their own homes while parents are away. Most teen prostitutes turn anywhere from 15–20 tricks a day. The Search for Independence Many girls who have turned to prostitution say they were searching for independence from strict homes or families that kept tight control over their finances. One Wrong Turn Often, girls do not make a rational choice to turn to prostitution. Instead, they are victims of a series of bad choices: hanging out with the wrong crowd, detaching from school, fighting with parents. These circumstances lead them to the kind of desperation that makes them vulnerable to advances from pimps. What Pimps Look For According to the Paul and Lisa Program, an organization that rescues teens from prostitution, pimps now look for girls who are educated and from good homes. These girls earn more money, work harder and face an embarrassing situation if they return home. What Pimps Provide Many former prostitutes say that while they were unhappy with the work, they felt listened to and cared for by their pimp. Money and material possessions helped to make them feel validated. One of the most valuable things a parent can do is open a successful dialogue with their teen. What can you do to keep this from happening to your family? Get suggestions to help you reconnect with your daughter. |
