How to Confront a Registered Sex Offender

Jake Goldenflame is a registered sex offender who advocates that sex offenders on parole follow Megan's Law. Jake believes that sex offenders should act like guests in the community and be forthcoming with their pasts. If you discover someone living in your neighborhood is a former sex offender, and you want to approach him or her, Jake suggests taking the following steps.

1. First, contact police to make sure the offender doesn't have a history of violence.
2. If there's no history of violence, speaking directly with the offender is often a good idea. The offender's biggest defense is deceit. Once they know that you're aware of their crime, they will be less likely to target your children.
3. Feel free to tell the offender that you don't want them to interact with your family.
4. Network in your neighborhood. Make sure the word goes out that a sex offender lives in the area. Encourage other families to make contact.
5. Wish the offender well in his or her recovery. Even if you're angry, extending your best wishes can help ensure there is no retaliation for your actions
