Inside the Mind of a Convicted Child Molester Jake Goldenflame is a convicted child molester who confesses to molesting his then three-year-old daughter and having sex with countless boys that he didn't know. Unlike most sex offenders, Jake is in favor of Megan's Law, a law that requires sex offenders to register with the state they live in so that people can find out if somebody like him is living next door.
Jake Goldenflame: I think that the community can't deal with this subject effectively unless it knows how we think, what's going on within us, what we're really like. Oprah: Had you told your daughter not to tell? What was your initial response when she did tell? Jake Goldenflame: Tremendous relief that it was finally out, that I no longer had to carry this tremendous burden of guilt and shame and self-loathing, that finally it was out and I could do something about it. Oprah: Is a child molester ever cured? Jake Goldenflame: No, there's no such thing. Oprah: It's been 12 years since you've been out of prison. Have you had the urge to molest? Jake Goldenflame: Yes. When the urge comes up—and this is what therapy does for you—I'll see a young teenage boy that turns me on. And the very next moment what comes up in my mind is, "Do you really want to ruin his life?" And that's not so appealing. Lust can be very appealing but ruining his life? That's just ugly. Oprah: You say Megan's Law keeps you in check. How so? Jake Goldenflame: I never know who around me knows of my past. Maintenance is forever. The statistics show that even those of us who have gone through therapy and have these wonderful track records afterwards, if enough years go by after therapy, the re-offense rates start rising unless you continue in some kind of counseling. Oprah: You say Megan's Law is not even enough. Jake Goldenflame: No. It's a start. What is really needed is for healing to begin in our country. Offenders have got to tell people who know them about their past themselves. All of a sudden something's gone. That something is called deceit. Deceit is the first weapon in every sex offender's arsenal. The moment you disclose, it's gone. |
