Why are You Overweight?
Bob Greene says that diet books do not work, simply because they assume that every body is the same. You must first understand why you are overweight in order to find your path to good health.
Bob says there are three categories that overweight people fall under. Determine your category, and start making changes! "Everyone has a unique concern, and to address that is to know who you are, and what your challenges are." — Bob Greene Severely Obese People who are obese (those with at least 100 pounds to lose) have a genetic predisposition to obesity. This does not mean they cannot lose weight, but the choice to get healthy and the road traveled will be more difficult—but still achievable. There's about a 5 percent success rate long-term of keeping the weight off. But there are things obese people can do to up those odds, Bob says.Emotional Eating Most Americans fit into this category—people who eat for emotional reasons. Most of these people know diets inside and out, and that's the downfall…food is not the major problem. Bob says that losing weight won't make you happy until you determine the underlying emotional issues that are causing you to overeat. Try keeping a food journal to help uncover these possible reasons.Bad Food Choices Bob says most diet books are geared toward those who just make bad food choices. But only about 10 to 15 percent of people who are overweight fall into this category. The statistics for people in this category are very good for keeping weight off.
