Q: Are tunics in or out? Which length is most flattering?

A: Tunics are always in. They're old (really old) favorites—ancient Greeks and Romans wore them—and modern classics, great for all ages and bodies. These days the tops are newly chic, thanks to my friend Tory Burch. We were talking recently about her signature piece: "Some of our younger customers use tunics as minidresses," she says. "Older women often do them with skinny pants." If you're petite, Burch advises, try a tunic that hits at the hip; tall women can go as far as mid-thigh.

TunicsTunics, not tents: Nothing huge or billowy, please. Try a waist-defining belted version (Miguelina, $195) or a cool print with slimming vertical trim and side slits that ease over hips and tush (Tory Burch, $275).
