Q: I've tried everything! How can I curl my stiff, straight eyelashes?

A: My Ask Val credo is "Never say die," so here's a suggestion from makeup artist Mally Roncal, who last time I saw her was fluttering some pretty spectacular fringe. Roncal uses what she calls the three pump system. Position a curler at the base of your lashes and give it a little pump; move it up to the middle of your lashes, pump again; and, finally, pump it at the tips. Then, using a waterproof mascara, start with the brush as close to the base of the lashline as possible and wiggle it up your lashes till they're completely coated. Let dry, then apply your usual mascara, from midlashes to tips only.

Keep in mind: You might try lash extensions glued onto your own lashes by a technician, which have a soft curl and can last up to a month, says Soul Lee, the lash and brow expert at Shu Uemura.
