Whether you shop at upscale boutiques or the nearest outlet mall, all the fashion trends you love are born on the runways. With dozens of designers presenting their own unique perspectives at New York's Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week, there's always something for everyone. But making sense of some of the key trends will help you know what to look for when these looks trickle down to a store near you. Here are a few of the top trends I spotted among the fall 2010 collections that you can translate into your wardrobe at any budget.

The Great Outdoors: For his fall 2010 collection, Isaac Mizrahi gave his uptown girl a taste of the great outdoors by adding quilted vests, shiny parkas and furry backpacks to brocade skirts and sexy cocktail dresses.

How to Wear It: Go for your own L.L. Bean-meets-Central Park look with a faux fur–trimmed coat, sporty anorak—or even a belt pouch (imagine a cool fanny pack), as seen on the runways at Tibi.

Ladylike Minimalism: In both their BCBG Max Azria and Max Azria collections, designers Max and Lubov Azria took a less-is-more approach, offering feminine dresses, tunics and tops with fluid, clean lines, subtle geometric prints and a mostly neutral palette with lots of black.

How to Wear It: Layer draped pieces over long-sleeve tees and opaque tights to get this modern look for less.

Fur: Everyone from Michael Kors to Brazilian designer Carlos Miele was loving fur for fall, suggesting that despite the recession, designers are optimistic.

How to Wear It: Although traditionally equated with luxury, fur's budget-friendly alternative these days also happens to be animal and eco-friendly. Go faux or vintage by hitting up thrift stores or your grandmother's closet to get your fur fix on the cheap.

Chunky Knits: From arm warmers at Tracy Reese to gigantic oversize scarves at Jill Stuart (which seem to swallow models whole), to say knits were popular on the fall runways is an understatement.

How to Wear It: Keep cozy by grabbing the thickest sweaters you can find in stores, plus arm warmers and big scarves, an easy way to up your style quotient without spending a lot.
Oscar De La Renta

Tomato Red: While black and gray certainly dominated most of the fall runway looks, color was not overlooked. One shade in particular—a rich reddish-orange hue—stood out in my mind on the runways of Isaac Mizrahi, Tibi and Nanette Lepore and also appeared in the collections of Oscar de la Renta and Tory Burch.

How to Wear It: Any time you can find a nuanced color, scoop it up fast. Unique shades always read more expensive than common Crayola-box colors.
