Q: Are the new self-tanning moisturizers safe to use every day?

A: Absolutely, says Loretta Ciraldo, MD, clinical professor of dermatology at the Miller School of Medicine at the University of Miami. Allergic reactions to the active tanning ingredient, dihydroxyacetone, are very, very rare. Dr. Ciraldo especially likes Aveeno Continuous Radiance Moisturizing Lotion ($8) because it's really moisturizing. We also like Avon Skin So Soft Soft & Glow Satin Glow Daily Body Moisturizer ($8), L'Oréal Sublime Glow Moisturizing MicroFine Mist ($10), and Nivea Visage Sun-Kissed Facial Moisturizer ($7). But here's the most important thing to remember: Even though you look tan, you still need protection from UVA/UVB rays.

Bottom Line: Use self-tanning moisturizers as often as you like, but don't skimp on the sunscreen.
