Once you've committed to taking care of yourself in the now, Peter says you should think ahead and consider a long-term plan for self-care. He talks with Jean Chatzky, a personal finance expert and fellow Oprah & Friends host, about the two most important steps people need to take to guarantee they are taken care of as they age:
Finances: Jean says to load up your retirement account as much as you possibly can while you're still working. Then, she says to make a plan to pull that money out in an organized way so that it lasts as long as you do. Consider saving money via 401(k)s, deferred payment plans or discretionary funds, and protect your assets with proper insurance, she says.
Health: While taking care of yourself now may ensure better health down the road, Jean recommends purchasing long-term care insurance between the ages of 50 and 60, depending on your needs, medical history and health.
