Taking care of yourself is essential to staying sane—you'll not only look and feel better, you'll also be better able to take on the other tasks in your life, Peter says. For starters, Peter shares some things you can do at home for free to help you unwind and regain your center:

  • Take a visual retreat. Track down your favorite scene, photo or picture. Take some quiet time to sit in front of that image and simply envision you are there, Peter says.
  • Change the sheets on your bed. "Just climbing into the bed with that fresh scent is something that will move you to a place of peace and calm," Peter says.
  • Focus on your breathing. Lay flat on your back in the center of a room. Concentrate on relaxing your mind and body as you slowly inhale and exhale.
