The truth is that each and every one of us will face challenges in life—challenges that often build character, strength and resilience, Dr. Robin says. Although she doesn't know the Edwards family personally, Dr. Robin does know that they have already suffered a major tragedy in their lives when their son Wade was killed in a car accident in 1996. That incident may actually mean that John knows how to grapple with suffering, profound loss and emotions even better than the rest of us. "Maybe he knows how to focus in the face of a storm," she says. "And he probably also knows how and when to pull back when he needs to give his full attention to his family."
Rather than focusing on what John and Elizabeth should be doing with their lives, Dr. Robin says to use this opportunity to focus on your own life and your own convictions. "Use their information, use their lives, use what you might even see as a mistake and make sure that you don't do the same thing," she says.
