Whether you call it a hunch, going with your gut or intuition, Howard Wimer says each of us has a sense of inner guidance that can help us live a successful life. Jean talks with Howard, author of Inner Guidance and the Four Spiritual Gifts, about how you can make positive changes in your life by fine-tuning your ability to listen to your inner guide.

According to Howard, everyone is born with four spiritual gifts—clairvoyance (inner vision), clairaudience (inner thoughts or ideas), prophecy (inner knowing) and healing (inner feelings). For example, a clairvoyant might envision herself working in a new office before she's hired for the job, while someone who's in touch with his gift of healing will just "get a feeling for something." "And, if they follow it, they're usually right," Howard says. The trick is to identify which gift is your primary means of communication and then to learn how to trust it, he says.

Perhaps the most common roadblock to following inner guidance is understanding the difference between our feelings—which express who we really are at our core—and our emotions—which are the thoughts and ideas we've been taught to think and believe over the course of our lives. When we can get past our emotions, eliminate self-doubt and stop second-guessing our inner guides, Howard says we can live out our true purposes in life. "The key is to discern, 'Who [am I] inside? How do I communicate with myself? What do I want?'" he says. "And then everything else falls into place after that."
