Healthy School Lunches

Quick and Easy

Before you begin dreading the ominous task of packing your child's school lunches, think about this: Packing your child's lunch is a great way to personalize your child's meal with foods she'll enjoy…and to make you feel confident that your child is getting the necessary nutrients for health and calories for energy. After all, lunch is a third of your child's daily nutritional requirements, so it's important to make sure it is healthy, fun and delicious.

When you think "school lunches" this year, steer away from the attractively packaged convenience and snack foods on corner aisles and steer toward the perimeter of the grocery store. That's where you'll find the colorful produce section, the dairy section, the lean meats and fish and the shelves of whole grain products, and nuts and seeds. Using foods from the perimeter of the store, you can pack healthy school lunches that kids will enjoy filled with key nutrients to help them learn, grow and stay healthy.
