Cause for Concern

You have reason to be concerned if your baby is 1 month old and…

  • he doesn't react to loud noises by exhibiting the Moro reflex, or startle reflex.
  • he doesn't blink when shown a bright light.
  • he doesn't focus and follow a nearby object that is moving from side to side.
  • he isn't able to suck and swallow with ease.
  • he has a stronger grasp in one hand than the other.
  • he doesn't make eye-to-eye contact when he is awake and being held.
  • he doesn't stop crying when he is picked up and held.
  • he doesn't roll his head from side to side when he is placed on his stomach.
  • he rarely moves his arms and legs and/or seems stiff.
  • he seems "floppy" or loose-limbed.
  • his lower jaw trembles constantly (not just when he is crying or excited).
