A Volunteer Vacation
Shannon Davis and her family had always had typical vacationsamusement parks, visiting relatives. Then, five years ago, they took a different kind of vacation that changed their lives. Shannon and her husband were asked to sponsor an inner-city mission that works with disadvantaged kids. When they met the kids, it was like love at first sight. Shannon realized that working with these kids was something she should have been doing her whole life. The Davis' "volunteer vacation" allowed them to see how blessed their lives were, and that they had been given a gift. When they returned home, they started a day camp in a low-income area. Because of its success, they have been able to create a mentoring program for teen-age girls and offer free medical service, with help of volunteer doctors and nurses. This experience has been valuable for the entire familythey get along with all kinds of people, and have more compassion for those whom our society often forgets. When we think of a vacation, we imagine getting away from it all, feeding our spirit and soul. For Shannon and her family, each trip to the day camp is like a vacation, because they always return renewed and refreshed. From the show Not Your Typical Vacation |
