Sargent Shriver never thought he'd be managing
national programs, 13 of which he started. Sargent's
belief that the poor should not remain poor
drove him to help where no one had helped before.
He started the Peace Corps "for people who were
very young or very poor overseas." The creation
of the Peace Corps was an exciting time for
America because never had there been a program
promoting peace and helping internationally.
It was the first of many Sargent Shriver programs.
Another source of pride and adoration is his
wife, Eunice Kennedy Shriver. They've been married
for 45 years. He lovingly admits being married
to her is like "heaven." Eunice, like her husband,
created programs that help millions of people.
Her work to develop the Special Olympics amazes
Sargent, and he finds her work to be an enormous
source of joy for him.
Sargent believes everybody can be happy and
fulfilled if they concentrate their time on
people other than themselves. He suggests, "help
other people to achieve the maximum of their
ability, and you will find your own ability
is enhanced."
