The Oprah Winfrey Show
Remembering Your Spirit

Learning to Listen

Margaret Inocentti "The lights went on inside — I realized I was spanking my children from a point of anger and not doing it from a point of love."

Margaret Inocentti was blessed with two beautiful children. Like all children, hers would occasionally misbehave. Margaret would spank them without giving it a thought. "After I would spank them, I would get a knot in my stomach. I saw their little faces just look at me with fear and I felt so awful, my heart would sink."

One day while watching The Oprah Winfrey Show, Margaret realized she was not disciplining her children from a point of love. "I recognized that spanking my children was diminishing not only my spirit but theirs as well." She made a conscious decision to stop spanking her children.

Now Margaret takes time to be present to her children and listens when they are acting out or acting inappropriately. "I wanted to raise children who felt free to think for themselves and realize the gifts they had to offer life. My children are a gift."

"There is a reward in the sense of joy in overcoming my urge to spank my children and learn to listen instead."
