What Winning Is All About

Eunice Kennedy Shriver "Let me win. But if I cannot win, let me be brave in the attempt."
Special Olympics Oath

Today 170 countries and over one million athletes participate in the Special Olympics, all because of one extraordinary woman — Eunice Kennedy Shriver. She founded the Special Olympics in 1968, during a time when people thought achievement was beyond the mentally retarded. But the world was proved wrong — the Special Olympics gave the mentally retarded an opportunity to excel and become champions!

Eunice says that courage, determination and forgiveness are the key traits. Her new heroines are mothers of children with special needs — mothers who've demanded that their children be treated like other children.

If it wasn't for the love and support of Loretta Claiborne's mother, Loretta wouldn't be the role model to the millions of children with special needs today. Eunice says Loretta created a whole new image of who the mentally retarded are and what they can become. Her great physical skill, forgiveness and love are encouragement not only to the mentally retarded but for everyone.
