Mattie was almost 14 years old when he passed away in the summer of 2004 after battling a rare form of muscular dystrophy for many years. He was known as a phenomenal poet, peacemaker and philosopher. What people don't know, Jeni says, is that Mattie was also the king of practical jokes. Despite being in and out of the hospital for much of his life, Jeni says Mattie used his incredible sense of humor to raise the spirits of other patients.
Dr. Angelou also shares stories about her own childhood. Raised by her grandmother in a small town in Arkansas, she imparts some of the wisdom and lessons that she learned growing up. Children join the conversation, as Dr. Angelou tells of her hope for our children and the children of the world.
