Dr. Oz talks to Dr. Nicholas Perricone, author of several best-selling books, including 7 Secrets to Beauty, Health, and Longevity, about combating the signs of aging. Dr. Oz is also joined by Teresa Tapp, creator of the T-Tapp fitness regimen and author of Fit and Fabulous in 15 Minutes
Aging skin is inflamed on the inside, Dr. Perricone says. The easiest way to reverse the aging process in inflamed skin is through an anti-inflammatory diet.. "Lots of fruits and vegetables, and foods with bright colors," he explains. "Make sure you have enough protein and good fats—essential, monounsaturated fats," like those found in nuts and olive oil. It's also important to rid your diet of refined carbohydrates and bad fats, Dr. Perricone says. After only a few days on an anti-inflammatory diet, you'll notice increased radiance in your skin and any puffiness and dark circles will begin to disappear, he says. In addition, your serotonin levels will increase, causing you to feel better.
Dr. Perricone advocates reducing the inflammatory levels in the body because high levels reduce bone and muscle mass. When you decrease inflammation, you'll put on muscle and increase bone density. Dr. Perricone recommends a three-tier program:
- Step 1: Follow an anti-inflammatory diet
- Step 2: Take anti-inflammatory supplements.
- Step 3: Use a topical anti-inflammatory and make lifestyle changes.
