He's a comedian, actor, producer, good dad and great husband extraordinaire! Gayle talks to Will Smith about his new movie, his relationship with his children, and his marriage to actress Jada Pinkett Smith!
In his new movie, The Pursuit of Happyness, Will plays Chris Gardner, a homeless man struggling to raise his son while trying to create a better life for them. Will's real-life son Jaden plays his son in the film, which was based on a true story. Will says working with Jaden was fun and easy, especially in the raw, poignant moments of the film. "Emotionally it was a lot easier to find the reality of the moment as an actor, and I didn't have to really do any acting," he says. In addition, Jaden is a naturally talented actor, Will says. "It's a gear that he has that he can go to," Will says. "He feels people's pain. He's just so natural and can deliver it."
In real life, Will is the father of three children—besides 8-year-old Jaden, he has 5-year-old daughter Willow and 14-year-old son Trey. He has been married to actress Jada Pinkett Smith for almost nine years. Gayle wants to know: What is the secret to their successful marriage?
"Jada and I know very clearly that…we desperately have to find agreement [in our lives]," he says. When arguing, they never raise their voices, they take turns talking and they never use profanity, Will says. "Our communication is just impeccable. … Jada and I are very specific about how we talk to one another because we both can get heated and things can go places that they don't need to go."
"There is this weird thing when you finally connect and [resolve the argument]," Will says. "That person starts looking cute again!"
