While volunteering at different shelters, Genevieve says she noticed the children who stayed there went to sleep in their regular clothes. When she learned it was because the children didn't have any pajamas—and that some of the children didn't even know what pajamas were—she decided to take action. "From that day on, I've been on a mission," she says. "I'm like a machine to get as many of these hundreds of thousands of kids in this country pajamas."
In 2001, Genevieve founded Pajama Program, a nonprofit organization that provides pajamas as well as books to underprivileged and foster kids. With 73 chapters across the country and the help of active volunteers, corporate sponsors and individuals, Genevieve says Pajama Program is bringing comfort and security to thousands of children with new sleepwear and books.
Genevieve explains that for many of the children who come from broken homes or are waiting to be adopted, the gift of new pajamas gives them much more than just something to sleep in. "It's like [giving the children] a hug at bedtime," she says.
