Perimenopause, or pre-menopause, is the transition period before a woman enters menopause. Menstrual periods are still occurring in women who are in perimenopause, often regularly. The duration of perimenopause is usually between 5 and 13 years, and typically begins around age 40. However, many women experience it sooner, as well as later. Symptoms include skipped periods, heavy periods, insomnia, night sweats, cold hands, heart palpitations, changes in sexual desire, and dry skin.
