Why This 51-Year-Old Woman Is Fighting for the Right to Die

Season 5 Episode 501
Aired on 03/15/2015 | CC tv-14
At just 51 years old, Jennifer Glass, a wife, stepmother and writer, is battling advanced lung cancer. Following her terminal prognosis, Jennifer began advocating for right-to-die legislation in California so she might have the choice to die peacefully in her home. "I would find great comfort in knowing that I had another option," Jennifer said to lawmakers. "That I might choose to be done with cancer before cancer is done with me."

Jennifer is working closely with Compassion & Choices, the same nonprofit organization that supported Brittany Maynard during the final months of her life. Brittany, a young woman who was diagnosed with incurable brain cancer in 2014, became the face of the right-to-die movement before her death.

Dan Diaz, Brittany's husband, now advocates alongside Jennifer for end-of-life options. "Brittany so often felt, 'This isn't about me.' That's what she would say," Dan tells Oprah. "'This is about everybody that might find themselves in this predicament.'"
