About This Episode
In 2004, Oprah introduced the world to an extraordinary 11-year-old boy—poet and peacemaker Mattie Stepanek. Mattie had a rare form of muscular dystrophy but never let it hold him back. He became an Oprah Show regular and one of viewers' favorite guests. Oprah calls him a "big soul in a little boy's body" and says his advice influenced her decision to run The Oprah Show for 25 years. On June 22, 2006, Mattie died in the arms of his mother. He was 13 years old. Today, his legacy lives on. "Mattie made us feel more human and present and able to appreciate even the smallest things," Oprah says.
