Moment #18: The James Frey Controversy
Photo: George Burns
It was the biggest controversy in Oprah Show history. In 2006, James Frey's memoir, A Million Little Pieces, was chosen as an Oprah's Book Club selection. Shortly after, TheSmokingGun.com published a piece accusing James of fabricating and embellishing parts of the book. A media firestorm ensued and James returned to The Oprah Winfrey Show for a controversial interview that made headlines around the world.
In 2008, Oprah called James privately to apologize for the way she conducted the interview. "When you lose compassion, you lose yourself," she says. During her final season in 2011, James and Oprah sat down for one more television interview to clear the air and move forward as friends.
