No Matter How Dark, the Light Is Available to You! Reflections on Lost in WoonsocketPosted: Fri 02/24/2012 09:00 AM
This beautiful doc is about some very loving filmmakers who help two men stuck in the dark depths of alcohol addiction try to step back into the Light. I won't talk much about the story because I know you are going to tune in to OWN Sunday morning at 11/10c to watch "Super Soul Sunday"! So what I'm going to talk about here on the blog is the deep meaning in this amazing piece and how it applies to YOUR life! The takeaway for me from this moving film is that no matter how dark your life may be, no matter how impossible it may seem to overcome the challenges in your life, there is an answer, and there is a way out. I'm reminded of one of my favorite Wayne Dyer quotes. He says, "I am realistic; I expect miracles." Wayne doesn't say this from an arrogant point of view! NO! Rather he understands how The Uni-verse works. The Uni-verse is like a miracle machine. And if we are looking for miracles in our lives, we will begin to see them everywhere. That's easy for me to say now. But when I was stuck in the dark depths of my own drug addiction, it was impossible for me to see anything other than why I was unhappy. That is why the first step in any 12-step program or serious spiritual transformational process is to admit that you are powerless. This is not a statement of being a victim. No, this is a statement of truth. In life, the only thing we have total 100 percent control/power over is THE MEANING we give the events of our lives. And when we are stuck in a pattern of being or an addiction that is ruining our lives, we no longer have control over even the meaning we are giving the events of our lives. We are stuck in a pattern of self-defeating doubt, shame, guilt and anger. So the first step is to realize: "Hey, I'm just a drop in the ocean. If I want to surf the high waves of life, I have to be connected to a power greater than myself." And the cool thing about this is that when you begin to surrender your will to the will of The Uni-verse, The Uni-verse's will is for you to be happy. And what's possible with the psychology of someone who is stuck in addiction or self-defeating behavior is not the same thing that is possible for someone who is in a humble and willing state to change. Once we see things as they are, but not worse than they are, we can begin to change. And what's so cool about Lost in Woonsocket is that we get to see clearly that the answer to our problems is always available—we just have to be willing to see a situation from a different point of view. And when we do that, we step into a new realm of possibility. This film beautifully articulates the power of focus and psychology. If our focus is on the problem, all we will see is more of the problem. BUT, if we dwell in the mystical and magical realm of possibility and start to ask questions and see things from a larger perspective, we open ourselves up to the possibility of a miracle, of something greater to come along. If we stay willing, if we stay open and if we ask The Uni-verse to show us another way, a new way will be shown. I always like to say that when you walk with Faith, a way will be made from no way. Our job is not to figure out the how, all we need to do in the beginning to go from darkness to Light is to surrender our preconceived notions of what we thought was possible and just dwell in the possibility that some new way of being or seeing is available. And when we surrender our problems and our current way of thinking to The Uni-verse, we begin to take the first step that allows miracles to begin to show up in our lives in ways we could not previously see. In science, the word "paradigm" basically means "the current view or understanding of the world based on what we know in any given field." A PARADIGM SHIFT happens when new information becomes available. And many times that new information completely crushes all previous assumptions we had. One very obvious paradigm shift was going from the perception that the earth is flat to the perception that the earth is round. When we became aware of that new truth, it changed everything. And it's normal for people to remain in old paradigms or to hold on to old limiting beliefs. But if we can take a step back and constantly renew our minds to know that a paradigm shift can happen in our own lives at any time in the form of a miracle—and ask The Uni-verse to show us a new way—a way will be made from no way. This also tends to happen faster when we are in service to other people. This is the promise of The Uni-verse. I hope you are as inspired as I am from watching Lost in Woonsocket! Enjoy the beautiful story, and I hope that it may serve as a reminder in your own life that the shift from darkness to Light can happen in an instant if we are open, receptive and available to a paradigm shift in our lives at any moment. Love, Mastin Watch Lost in Woonsocket on Sunday, February 26, at 11/10c on OWN.
