O my, my! If I had a hoop, I'd do the hula right now, I'm so excited that WILD hit #1 on three different New York Times bestseller lists! Hardcover, E-books, and combined. Congratulations Cheryl!! WOW! I know she's grateful to all of you who've downloaded or bought the book. I thank you too, it makes me so happy to share good words and pass them on.
That's what I'll be doing this Sunday morning beginning at 11am/10c—spending @SUPER SOUL SUNDAY with bestselling author Cheryl Strayed. I tried to ask everything I thought you'd want to know about her incredible trek up the Pacific Crest Trail that turned into a spiritual journey of the highest order. We all have times in our lives when we need to be reminded of the GREATNESS of something bigger than ourselves: Times when you wanted to give up, or felt like you lost your way. Cheryl says WILD is "about bearing the thing you thought you couldn't bear.”
I walked away from this interview thinking, “Gee I like her so much, she was so normal. I could be her friend.” I think you all will feel the same. You're going to see yourself in her, just as I did. And maybe even want to climb the PCT. Or even better, "Bear the thing you thought you couldn't.”
Join us for a hearty conversation with lots of aha's and more than a few HA's! This Sunday on "Super Soul Sunday" on OWN, Oprah.com and Facebook.com/OWNtv. Bring your hula hoop!

1. The Wrong Idea Persisted and Persisted
I write a lot of essays, and in 2008 I finally decided, "I'll do an essay about my hike." I kept saying to myself, "This is not a book." Even when the essay reached 60 pages, I still thought, "Well, maybe it's a part of a book. I'll write a collection of essays, and it will be the one really long essay."
2. A Rogue Flu Swept in and Took Over Her Life
While I was writing Wild, both my kids were in preschool. They were born 18 months apart, and we don't have anyone that takes our kids for free. My husband has his mother, but she really doesn't babysit, and I don't have parents.
Two months before the book was due to my editor, when I really was supposed to be diligently writing along, my husband had to go out of town. And— gulp—it just so happened that both my kids got the flu. There were two full weeks where they couldn't go to preschool, and I was freaking out, saying, "I have this book due! And my husband is out of the country! And here I am at home with two sick kids!" I was absolutely beside myself. I thought I could never finish.
