On December 26, 2004, Nate Berkus survived the deadly East Asian tsunami that took the lives of an estimated 181,000 people. Nate's partner, photographer Fernando Bengoechea, is presumed to have been killed. Nate and Fernando were vacationing in Sri Lanka when the tsunami hit. On January 17, 2005, Nate appeared on The Oprah Show to share his story of survival.
