Since he was a little boy, designer Nate Berkus says he has been drawn to the sea. In 2004, he survived the Indian Ocean tsunami, a natural disaster that took the lives of more than 200,000 people—including his partner Fernando Bengoechea. Less than a month after the tsunami hit, Nate opened up to Oprah about how he survived and what he saw in its aftermath. On December 26, 2004, Nate Berkus survived the deadly East Asian tsunami that took the lives of an estimated 181,000 people. Nate's partner, photographer Fernando Bengoechea, is presumed to have been killed. Nate and Fernando were vacationing in Sri Lanka when the tsunami hit. On January 17, 2005, Nate appeared on The Oprah Show to share his story of survival.
