1. Go for the Richness This first choice is inspired by a quote from Love Hate Love. Liz Aldermen's son Peter died on September 11, 2001. He was at a meeting at the World Trade Center. Since Peter's death, Liz and her family have made it their life's mission to help the millions of people around the world who are affected by mass violence get the mental healthcare they need. In the film, she says: "You never get over the loss of a child. I will never be the person I was before Peter was killed. And sometimes I miss that person. But there is a richness to what we're doing with our lives." We all should demand that richness out of our lives. How do we get it? We get it by stepping out of our insular worlds and seeing beyond the mundane of the day-to-day. When we choose to see the world from other people's perspectives and let that affect our actions, we are often the ones who benefit, so even if it's just for this more selfish reason, go for it! Personally, I experience this all the time. I am a mom of three children—2, 4 and 6. We live in suburbia, and I can get sucked into this world—you know, the carpools, lunch making, etc. But knowing the people in this film (and our other films) and letting them inspire me has made every day richer, and I'm so grateful. 2. Surround Yourself with People Who Inspire You This is why we're all so drawn to Oprah, right? It's essential to find the people in our lives who make us better, who challenge us, who hear our crazy dreams and say, "Yes, that's totally impractical, but when do we start?" It is these relationships that will drive us all to change the world for the better. I think we all know the feeling when you finish having coffee with someone who inspires you; you can't wait to go make things happen...versus that energy-draining meeting with someone who makes you want to go crawl into bed. Get rid of them! Unfriend, don't return calls, whatever it takes—the right people in your life will take you to the right place. Start with the people in Love Hate Love; they would be happy to hear from you! 3. Use Opposition to Your Advantage This is one of the main points of the film. When the people in Love Hate Love experienced the ultimate trauma at the hands of terrorists, they chose love! Hopefully, none of us will ever experience this kind of tragedy, but we all have our own obstacles and spend a lot of time dealing with them and working through them. This energy can be used as the most powerful force for change. We're going to be expending the energy anyway, so why not channel it into something that will benefit ourselves and society? This reminds me of another quote from the film. Esther Hyman, whose sister died in the mass transit terror attacks in London in 2005, asks, "What would we have done if we hadn't done something positive? Would we have gone on an endless downward spiral?" Her answer was no, and because of this decisive choice, she has now changed the lives of thousands of children in India. 4. Resist the Barrage of Pessimism Again, I'm taking a quote from someone—I'm a trained journalist and know I must attribute my quotes! This one is from our esteemed executive producer, Sean Penn. At the film's premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival, Penn said, "This film is a gift; it transcends the barrage of pessimism we can have." I think he hit the nail on the head. We are all inundated with bad news that leaves us feeling helpless—again, that crawling-back-into-bed feeling—and we need to block ourselves from this and open ourselves up and align ourselves with the millions of people who are spreading love around the world.
