Intention: With the ease of technology, it's sometimes easy to hide behind the screen—whether you mean to or not. It's time to power down your gadgets and reconnect with the human experience.

Assignment: Reconnect with a loved one. Instead of emailing or texting, call someone to hear his or her voice, or handwrite a note and pop it in the mail.

I Am Assignment #4: Learn the Power of One

Intention: Sometimes the thought of "making change" can be overwhelming: Do I have time? I don't want to do it alone. Why don't I start next year? But here's the thing: Now is the time to change your mind and your perception. As you'll see in I Am, historian Howard Zinn says, "Change happens from millions of tiny acts."

Assignment: Perform one random act of kindness. Tell us what you did and inspire someone else to follow your lead.

Examples: Get creative: Buy a few newspapers and hand them out to your fellow subway riders. Leave a cheerful plant anonymously on a colleague's desk. Surprise your children with notes in their lunch boxes. Buy an extra cup of coffee and give it to the police officer outside.

I Am Assignment #3: Let Go

Intention: Give yourself a gift today: Let go of something that's bothering you. It's increasing your negative energy and keeping you from living the life you deserve. Instead, be happy for the blessings you've been given and use your time and energy to do good in the world instead of stewing in the bad.

Assignment: Today, let go of one grudge you're holding—even the one against that guy who cut in front of you at the grocery store. If you need to let go of a larger hurt, simply make the commitment to forgive that person. You don't have to figure out how today, just decide that you will.

I Am Assignment #2: Decide What You Really Need in Life

Intention: In I Am, you'll see that Tom Shadyac realized his big house, fancy cars and private plane didn't bring him happiness. He found the contentment he sought after downsizing. And he's not alone. Look at nature—nothing in nature takes more than it needs, so why should we?

Assignment: Today, look around your home and make a list of what you can live without. Then, give up one thing. If after today you discover you don't need it, pay it forward and give this item to someone in need.

Examples: If you can get by with five pairs of shoes, not the 20 in your closet, donate them to your favorite organization. Are there more computers in your house than there are people? Donate the ones you don't need to a local school or senior center.
