This Sunday, Oprah is sitting down with Francine and David Wheeler, one of the 26 families who lost loved ones in the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in Newtown, Connecticut, on December 14, 2012. With astounding grace and wisdom, the couple shares how they are coping with the tragic loss of their 6-year-old son Benjamin through courage, strength and love.(Tune in at 11 a.m. ET/PT on OWN or join our worldwide simulcast at Oprah.com, Facebook.com/supersoulsunday or Facebook.com/owntv.)
After that devastating day, a non-profit organization called Sandy Hook Promise was born—led by community members and several parents and spouses who lost loved ones. It's mission is twofold: To reduce the causes of gun violence and help their community through this tragedy.
If you'd like to join Sandy Hook Promise in making a difference, there are three things you can do today:
1. Sign the promise. Visit SandyHookPromise.org to join the hundreds of thousands of people who have already pledged the following: I promise to join other parents to encourage and support sensible solutions that help prevent gun violence in our communities and our country.
2. Share the promise with others. Start by liking Sandy Hook Promise on Facebook and following them on Twitter. Then, spread the word to your friends and loved ones.
3. Create your a #parenttogether video. Using social media apps such as Vine or Instagram, videotape yourself making your own pledge to take action—it only takes a few seconds! Examples of what you could say are: I promise to parent together to keep all of our children safe. I promise to parent together to put our children first. I promise to parent together because I care about the community.
Once finished, post online and include the hashtag #parenttogether.
