What Jimmy Carter Prayed for When He Was President

As president of the United States, Jimmy Carter faced many difficult challenges that would lead to far-reaching consequences. He credits his devout faith for helping to sustain him during these trying moments.

In 1978, for example, President Carter invited Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin and Egyptian President Anwar Sadat to meet at Camp David to broker a peace agreement after decades of conflict. When it looked as if Sadat might leave without striking a deal, President Carter prayed.

"One time in Camp David, when I thought Sadat was leaving without an agreement, I put on a coat and tie for a change, and I knelt down and prayed to God to help me with Sadat," President Carter tells Oprah. "And I went over and had a horrible confrontation with him—and he decided to stay."

After a tense and emotional 13 days, a historic deal was finally reached. Ultimately, the Camp David Accords went down as one of the greatest achievements of Jimmy Carter's presidency.
