In 1993, actress Ali MacGraw's Malibu, California, home was burned to the ground in a wildfire. It was exactly the wake-up call she was waiting for to leave Los Angeles. "I thought, 'This has got to be happening to me for a reason. ... So, what's the bigger story here?'" she says. "And I was sure that it was to get me out of L.A."

Had she stayed in Los Angeles, Ali says, she would not have been able to age as comfortably as she has. "It's tough being an ex-female pop star getting older in a town that often judges you by 'How do you look?'" she says.
