Shaka Senghor on How Prison Culture Defies Spiritual Law

CC | tv-14
Oprah sits down with Shaka Senghor, an author and activist, who turned his life around after spending 19 years in prison for second-degree murder. Since his release, Shaka has been a vocal proponent of criminal justice reform. He has written a memoir, Writing My Wrongs: Life, Death, and Redemption in an American Prison, in which he points out the dehumanizing realities of prison life.

Shaka and Oprah discuss how prison culture defies spiritual law, causing profound damage to an inmate's psyche. "[The environment in prison] reinforces everything that you've been taught negative about yourself. ... The more negative you are, the more validated you are in the environment," he says. "It's the complete opposite of what life is."
