Jack Canfield on Why People Do Bad Things

Season 6 Episode 615
Aired on 12/13/2015 | CC tv-14
Jack Canfield is best known for co-creating the Chicken Soup for the Soul book series, which has sold more than 110 million copies in the U.S. and Canada alone. More recently, Jack has focused his attention on success, in particular helping others get from where they are to where they want to be.

In Jack's experience, he has come to realize that every choice people make—even the bad ones—was made for completely valid reasons. "You were doing the best you could with the awareness, skills, tools and knowledge you had at the time to meet a basic need," he says. "You know, whether people cheated on their income taxes or some kid joined a gang or someone did something that we'd say is illegal, they were trying to meet some basic need for approval, for connection, for belonging. If they had better tools or awareness, they would have done better."

Find out why Jack believes the answer for getting people to do better isn't punishment—it's offering opportunities to gain new skills and awareness.
