Brené Brown: Are You Hooked on the Story of Your Struggle?

Season 7 Episode 622
Aired on 10/04/2015 | CC tv-14
We've all been here: You have a strange or unpleasant encounter with someone, and you keep replaying it in your head all day long. You wonder what you did to offend this person, and you invent a story about why he or she mistreated you.

In Brené Brown's new book, Rising Strong, she describes three phases everyone goes through in these moments: the reckoning, the rumble and the revolution. The reckoning is where it all begins.

When we fail, we tend to make a story about why we messed up—often based on faulty, biased information. Some of us become addicted to our stories, endlessly looping them in our heads. Ultimately, according to Brené, we need to acknowledge what we're feeling in those difficult, confused moments—and get curious enough to figure out why we're feeling it.

Watch as Brené explains the first phase in every healthy comeback.
