Japan has always been one of my favorite countries to visit; there is no place in the world like it. A densely populated island, it has boasted some of the most impressive high-tech infrastructure combined with beautiful, natural scenery in the world. It is a colorful and wholly unique culture. There are perhaps no people in the world as stoic as the Japanese. They are a people unaccustomed outward expressions of emotion. That all changed this weekend. The cries of anguish and loss can be heard around the world, it is sadly deafening.
Like so many around the world, I have been glued to images of Japan post tsunami and quake. I see devastated people trying so hard to maintain their stoicism amidst this unspeakable situation. It is impossible. I have spoken and emailed friends in different parts of Japan who have been shaken to their core. They are such proud people that it’s hard for them to ask for help even though that is exactly what they need.
I think of my beautiful friend Fumi and so many like her in Japan who would give anyone the shirt off their backs and never think to ask for anything in return.
Theirs is a country that was turned upside down within a matter of minutes. As people for whom the same thing could happen at any moment, they shouldn’t have to ask for help. We all should just do it.
