Growing up, Charlize Theron had it rough. As a teenager living in South Africa, she witnessed her mother shoot her father dead one night when he came home drunk, threatening them. Later, as we know, Charlize became a glamorous movie star and an Oscar® winner. Yet, she never forgot her home.

In 2008, Oprah Show cameras followed the actress to KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, where she educated a group of children on safe sex, a topic regarded as taboo in that part of the world. Here, in this archival clip, look back at Charlize's effort to use her platform to give back—and save lives—in her homeland.
