A Lotto Winner with a Prison-Bound Fiancé Finally Speaks Her Pain

Season 4 Episode 405
Aired on 10/22/2016 | CC tv-14
Despite spending $21 million of her lotto winnings to bail her fiancé out of jail, mother of four Marie Holmes must now face the painful fact that her partner, Lamarr, is leaving to serve his federal prison sentence. Lamarr's impending incarceration is devastating to Marie, who admits to Iyanla that she is still having trouble processing what lies ahead.

To help Marie address the root of her feelings, Iyanla digs deeper into Marie's past with a poignant question. "Who's the other man that left you to go to jail?" Iyanla asks softly.

"My father," Marie says, looking down.

It's crucial that Marie be able to speak her pain, Iyanla says, if she is ever going to be able to move through it. Cradling Marie in her arms, Iyanla encourages her to express to Lamarr what his prison sentence makes her feel inside.

"It's not going to be easy for me because you're going to be going away just like my dad did, and it really breaks my heart that you're going," Marie says, with tears rolling down her face. "I don't want you to go, but I know it's just something that you have to do. I was kind of depending on you to be here with me, and I'm scared of having to be alone and dealing with it on my own. But I have to do it anyway."

Lamarr wipes his own tears away as Marie continues. "You're not going to be here with me and the kids. You're not going to be here to watch them grow. I don't want it for them, but it's going to have to eventually happen," she says. "I don't want to do it without you, but I will do it."

Another breakthrough for Marie:
Marie tells her mother what's been bothering her for years about their relationship
