In the past, Luca's father Boone has tried to clean up their home to make it safe for his son, but Alex criticizes him for not putting things in the right place, so he gave up. Her friend Steven has also tried to help her clear the clutter, but she finds an excuse for keeping every item.

Now that Luca is walking, his safety is at risk because of the bins of clothes piled on top of the furniture that he could easily pull down on top of himself. He's able to reach the overhanging clutter on top of the tables, nearly pulling a sharp knife onto his head recently.
