Dr. Martin was trained in Community Health Science at the UCLA School of Public Health. She is founder and president of Harmony Project, a community benefit organization that promotes positive youth development through the study, practice and performance of music.

Harmony Project connects high-need youth with professional musician mentors 200 to 400 hours per year, provides instruments and music instruction at no charge (based on family income) and builds neighborhood youth orchestras with these young people on Saturdays, in Los Angeles' high crime districts and "gang reduction zones".

Harmony Project commits to students for their entire childhood ??? from early elementary or middle school through high school graduation ??? and provides college scholarships to support their participation in higher education. Harmony Project was awarded the President's Coming Up Taller Award for 2009, the nation's highest honor for an arts-based youth program.
